On Memorial Day weekend, The Virginians, along with many other chapters of the Southern Division of the Mid-Atlantic District, gathered together for a weekend of awesome barbershop singing! The Virginians had 5 quartets competing in the Friday night quartet contest. Forecast, who qualified to compete in the BHS International Quartet Contest coming in July 2017 at the Spring Pre-Lims contest, competed for evaluation only but led the pack of 21 quartets in this quartet contest! Three of the four other Virginians quartets scored in the top 10! We're very proud of all of our quartets: Forecast, R3P Harmony, Youth Reclamation Project, Rewind, and Four in the Morning!
The Virginians also competed in Saturday's chorus contest with 10 other choruses. We are the AAA Plateau Champions, and 2nd place winners overall in the contest with an average score of 74.8 and 53 men on the risers! In 2016, we decided to take a year off from competing to concentrate on our singing and increasing our membership. This was a very exciting weekend for the Virginians as our hard work and membership strategy paid off in spades!
On January 17th, The Virginians were treated to an evening of coaching with the world renowned music & singing coach, Steve Scott! It was a great night of singing and improving our craft! Thank you Steve!!
On January 10th, two of our Virginians, Robbie Pinkleton and our new President, Pete Adler shared a birthday. So in keeping with the tradition of the having the 'birthday boy' take us out at the end of the evening by directing the chorus in singing "Keep The Whole World Singing", they decided to make it a joint venture! Fun times!!
Youth Reclamation Project, better known as Mike, Roger, Vic and Hardman, braved the snowy weather joined many friends at the Mid-Winter 2016 Barbershop Harmony Convention on January 26th - 31st in Reno, Nevada. They competed in the Seniors Quartet competition and came in 8th place out of 25 quartets with an overall score of 70.2 as they sang "L-O-V-E" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It"! We are very proud of them! Way to go guys!
The Virginians had 3 participants, Mike Geipel, Joey Candrilli and Jerry Candrilli at the North Carolina Harmony Brigade at Pinehurst Resort in NC. It was a weekend of Extreme Quartetting where they purchased 12 top-level arrangements and had 5 months to learn and perform their parts. But not just learn them, they had to be prepared to sing in a quartet on all 12 songs upon arrival! This is an annual event that is part of the Harmony Brigades that happen all over the country and now in Berlin and the UK!
In addition to performing for a very enthusiastic local audience on Saturday night, there is a random quartet contest that all 130 guys participate in. Mike's quartet, "Vocal Concussion", won 3rd place!
Mike and Jerry are already members of the NCHB. Joey applied for the Chuck Greene Memorial Scholarship for young men between 18 - 28 years old and was accepted! The scholarship, which is funded by the NCHB members pays for the recipients participation expenses. It was a fantastic weekend!
The Virginians Chorus sang their hearts out in Reston, VA and executed their plan as rehearsed and took 1st place in the chorus competition with an average score of 70.6! The songs presented were "Daydream" and "Good Day/Wonderful Day Medley". Way to go Richmond!
At the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Reston, VA the Southern Division of the Mid-Atlantic District held it's annual convention. This year, 2 of the Richmond Chapter quartets won 1st and 2nd place! Congratulations to both of our outstanding quartets!
Forecast took 1st place with an average score of 75.4 and sang "Sunshine of Your Smile" and "Fit as a Fiddle/For Me and My Gal Medley".
Youth Reclamation Project came in 2nd place with an average score of 72.1 and sang "If We Can't Be The Same Old Sweethearts" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It".
